2 – Personal Skills and Experiences

Please use this space to detail your skills and experiences in general MSM and HIV intervention activities. For example coordination, peer outreach, edutainment activities and counselling etc.

Maximum of-700 words. DO NOT exceed the space provided

Since 2005 and till now, I worked as a volunteer in HIV interventions. During this years, I performed as a hidden MSM life and now started to change my open MSM life. I founded a general PLHIV S.H.G called '' Phoenix" together with my colleagues. I served as a peer care taker for hospitalized patients at our SHG. Then, I lead the fund raising portion of our SHG as a project leader. Now my responsibility at our SHG is a supervisor of care takers for hospitalized patients on Wai Bar Gi special hospital at Yangon and a coordinator of our SHG.

In addition, I also involved in hospital care program as a volunteer peer counselor for MSM target for three times a week and organize the peer gathering to share their experiences on taking the treatment and knowledge on HIV.

In the after nargis cyclone response time, I worked as a project supervisor in my '' Phoenix" S.H.G for relief and rehabilitation program for PLHIVs at cyclone affected areas near Yangon.

In 2009, I served as a freelance Trainer for MSM SHGs and PLHIV SHGs to build up the capacity in Team Building, Facilitation skills in country wide respective areas such Dry Zone, Northern Shan State, Delta Area, Kachin State and Rakhine State. In 2009 December, I was elected as a Secretary of Myanmar National MSM Network (Working group). I am also a focal person for Myanmar Positive Group and then I have to serve to coordinate the other networks within our country such sex worker network, IDU network, national NGOs network, women network and interfaith network.

3 – Personal Statement

Please use this space to detail why you think you are suitable for the programme. Maximum of 700 words. DO NOT exceed the space provided

Now, as I am working in Myanmar National MSM Network implementation group as a secretary, I really would like to fullfil the necessary skills and empower by myself to work hard and more on the future. I have never got such kind of training and technical support program before. But, I try very hard to support our community. This is really suitable for me because I was a PLHIV taking ART and I have little chance to go anywhere for other scholarships.

Sometime I don’t really satisfied my way of working and I really need to improve my knowledge and skill. I also want to meet friends who working on the same way , same aim and objective and would like to share knowledge, lessons learnt from each other and to know their challenges and how to overcome. If I get a chance to attend this program, I believe getting more knowledge, more MSM network friends and chance to empower our MSM community in our country.

In Myanmar, we face much stigma and discrimination to MSM not only on HIV but also culture in past along. If our MSM are less knowledge, less skills and less educational program which support to health and right on MSM, it will be more and more strike on stigma and discrimination to us. I also would like to learn in HIV prevention in the context of MSM and TG, the social and cultural contexts for stigma against MSM in the GMS and the role criminalization of male-to-male sex has played in the evolution of discrimination in this region.

I also like to learn the role of community mobilization in HIV interventions – regionally and globally, case study of successful community mobilization efforts that contributed to policy change, press releases, briefings, and conference – what they are and when and how to utilize them, basic public speaking strategies, including how to give media interviews.

Now I have attended 2 weeks course of Advocacy Training at Chiang Mai University, Faculty of Social Sciences. This training knowledge is very useful for how to advocate our MSM community with stakeholders.

After your program, I believe really improved my knowledge, my skill and way of thinking.

Also have a chance to meet with all participants from different organization, different area and different countries.

I believe, one day I have more confidence with knowledge to go back home and ready to help our MSM community development. I am dreaming for how to share my knowledge, how to educate our MSM community and how to advocate with stakeholders with proactive thinking.

I am very sure; I am suitable to attend this program.

4 – Future plan after finishing programme

Please use this space to detail how you would apply the learning and skills gained from the program if you were a successful candidate. Maximum of 700 words. DO NOT exceed the space provided

I have been exerting all my vigorous efforts to take part in the change and development process of MSM in Myanmar in different ways. Due to my dedication and hard work, I have been, to some extent, successful in my undertakings. For instance, I am involved in the development of National Network of MSM as a member and as the MSM rights focal person of my organization. Therefore, it is very critical to undertake advocacy activities to implement the National MSM Network strengthening and I will put all my efforts to take part with other key stakeholders including the government. My organization has already planned to do advocacy work for this plan and I could contribute for it. Moreover, I am the EC member of Myanmar NGO Network (MNN) working for civil society strengthening in Myanmar.

What I am really excited about this programme is the area I can contribute to the country on my return home. Firstly, I will bring the skills which I gain from the programme to the field of MSM empowerment by providing critical inputs to the National MSM network. Secondly, I am in the process of empowering and training individual MSMs who are different ethnics and different MSM groups throughout Myanmar, so I have the chance to take learning for the young MSMs from community to activate their roles in strengthening MSM capacities and fighting for their rights. I can contribute all the skills from the programme to the potential MSM leaders in Myanmar. Since I find myself in a very strategic position to be able to reach a large numbers of young MSMs and the members of National MSM network who are actively involved in wider social and development process, I can equip them with advocacy skills to help them persuade the community leaders, and authorities to give permission to be able to work better with all stakeholders and interlink with other non-state actors. Finally, I can add the value to the MNN(Myanmar NGOs Network) and my organization regarding implementation of advocacy activities regarding MSM empowerment and rights because organizations which are working for HIV issue pay only attention for MSM issues. If I could advocate to MNN, MSM related issues will be integrated to all the NGOs work.

All these contribution, I will make is not just for the organisation but to achieve the broader objective of contributing National MSM network development. These mentioned examples are the reason why I strongly believe that this programme fits my plan. Therefore, this programme has appealed to me to learn experience and skills in order to do better advocacy work and provide trainings by making the best use of the opportunities I have and the area I am working.
