2 – Personal Skills and Experiences

Please use this space to detail your skills and experiences in general MSM and HIV intervention activities. For example coordination, peer outreach, edutainment activities and counselling etc.

Maximum of-700 words. DO NOT exceed the space provided

As a youth living with HIV, Ive worked for one year as a volunteer in the Shanghai Home of Love, a local NGO dealing with AIDS prevention and with HIV+ individuals. Ive gained much experience and learned many skills from participating in these activities, particularly about how necessary it is to create a community with love, self-confidence and cooperation. I feel we are playing an important role in establishing relations between this organisation and HIV-infected friends.

How do we work? We have held many successful parties and other sorts of AIDS prevention intervention activities. During these events we invite experts to share their knowledge about HIV. Many friends ask a lot of questions, and discuss the problems they encounter in their daily lives. We also have some questions prepared to ask the HIV+ friends, and when they answer correctly, we give them some lovely presents. This creates an active and friendly atmosphere.

Many MSM people have no sense of the dangers of HIV, so there is much unprotected sex in their daily lives. Some day they may regret this, especially if they get back a report that says they are HIV positive. To avoid this we try our best to both stress the importance of safe sex and, should they learn they are infected by HIV, we do our best to comfort them. We hope gradually they can again live their lives with hope. For HIV prevention work we regularly go to gay bars, bathhouses and parks where MSM people gather, to pass out condoms and booklets, and hold other activities to tell MSM the facts about AIDS.

We have applied for limited funds, and need to make a budget for the best use of this financial assistance.

We have also contacted and learned from other local NGOs.

All in all, we need to use many social forces to build a community with no discrimination against HIV+ people.

Id like to contribute all my life and enthusiasm to this work

3 – Personal Statement

Please use this space to detail why you think you are suitable for the programme. Maximum of 700 words. DO NOT exceed the space provided

Its an honor for me to apply for this activity.

From working in an international hotel as a receptionist I have a foundation in communicating in English. I have met a lot of foreign visitors to China and have gained fluency in spoken English from interacting with them.

Because the program is in Asia I can go to other countries near China to learn how other societies treat MSM people, particularly those who are HIV+. As a young person, Id like to gain more knowledge and experience. This is a valuable program because it can provide me many opportunities.

Because HIV is spreading fast in the MSM community, we need to share our experience and cooperate with other organizations.

Because I am part of the MSM community and am also suffering from HIV, I know how hard our lives are. I know more exactly what our group needs and how we need to carry out our intervention. We particularly need to bring hope to those who are infected by HIV.

Though many HIV+ friends are not yet suffering full-blown AIDS, when they do reach this stage they feel very anxious. I feel we need to help these individuals the most.

I am still young and have a lot of enthusiasm for this work. Our government needs young people like me who have lofty ideals to create a new environment.

4 – Future plan after finishing programme

Please use this space to detail how you would apply the learning and skills gained from the program if you were a successful candidate. Maximum of 700 words. DO NOT exceed the space provided

1. First, we need to contact the media. By seeking their help to write stories about HIV, and by creating public service advertisements, we can let the whole society be concerned about HIV.

2. Then we should go deeply into the college campuses, middle schools and other sectors of the education community to help create practical materials for publicity about HIV prevention. It is critical that students know the importance of protecting themselves from AIDS.

3. We can better use December 1st---World AIDS Day---for publicity, leading to more and more people being concerned about HIV, especially about intervention among MSM groups.

4. We need to foster better cooperation between organizations dealing with the MSM community, paying special attention to efforts to eliminate discrimination.

5. We need to make more hospital visits to comfort AIDS patients and help them deal with their worries. They should be able to concentrate on making progress in their medical treatment, striving to live long.

6. We must continue to give out free condoms in the MSM community in such places as gay bars, gay bathhouses and other venues that China s MSM community visits.

Finally, this opportunity is very important to me. By learning more about HIV I can help make life safer and more comfortable in our community.
